Why Hermetic Principles

It has been suggested that Hermes Trismegistus, or he whom we called that, was a contemporary of Abraham and an instructor of that age. His Hermetic teachings can be seen embedded deep within any of the world religions of today. Even though it may seem there are great and significant differences in the doctrine of these religions, at some of the deeper levels, there are always certain "correspondences" to the Hermetic teachings; these teachings have grown and evolved into various forms.
Within each generation a number of persons or students open themselves to the teachings; to understand and carry on the knowledge of Hermes. For many years, alchemists attempted to turn base metals into gold. Hermetic alchemy is rather a transformation of the baser consciousness of man to a golden enlightenment; a transformation of the self as Penczak has suggested. The principles taught by Hermes, and those after him, help us to understand how we can transform ourselves, better understand nature at it's most glorious, and grasp the similarities between science today and philosophy of yesterday.
The Hermetic Teachings can be found across the globe in many countries; however, they are never identified with any particular country, nor with any particular religious sect. The reasoning behind this was so that the teachings did not become embedded into doctrine or a specific creed, but remain as a philosophy that transcended this man made structure. At the time of the dawning of Christianity, the teachings were lost under a shroud of theology and it has not been until recently that the Hermetic Principles have re-emerged.

Re-Discovering the Hermetic Principles

Some eight years ago, I chanced upon a book written by Christopher Penczak titled "The Inner Temple of Witchcraft". At that time, I had been on a trip with my Syster Wyrd to Salem; the purpose being to discover what had been tempting us for some time. I picked up this book in a shop during one of our last days in Salem and to this day, it remains one of my favourites.
Once home, I began studying it in depth and attempting to open my mind to all manner of things it was suggesting. Being so early in my journey of acquiring "occult" knowledge, I found it hard to grasp certain concepts. But now, some years later and with over a hundred kindred books laid to rest, I find myself drawn back to Christopher's book, specifically to its descriptions of the Hermetic Principles, and to the writings of Hermes Trismegistus in "The Kybalion".
2014 seems a good year and milestone in my search of knowledge to review both works. My hope is to receive and share understanding. I will not promise to anyone dedication to writing in this blog, as let's face it, I am a procrastinator, but I will attempt to as a discipline.
All the best to those out there who trip across my little spot on the vast web and look forward to any and all comments along the way.

Beginnings

“There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth...not going all the way, and not starting.”

(Hindu Prince Gautama Siddharta, the founder of Buddhism, 563-483 B.C.)

Today was a special day; a new year and a new moon.
The perfect day to promise yourself a new adventure. I think I will put some thoughts into that over the coming days before the full moon. By then I should have an idea of what that adventure will be.
I love this image I pulled from Pinterest. (Originator unknown) A path not yet travelled and one that beckons with the light.

A merry start to the New Year and Blessed Be all my friends and family Wyrd!

In the Deep Midwinter

As we have faced the cold time, with calm and renewed spirit, we turn to the newly lit fires of Yule. Our Sun is reborn as our Lord, from the dark we awaken to new life. Surround ourselves with calm and rest in the glow of peace. As I face East each morning to greet the new day, so I rest in Midwinter and await the first awakenings of Imbolc. Blessed Be everyone.

What is Shadow?

"Shadow" is the negative aspects of ourself and all that they involve; the scars on our body and soul from past traumas and the negative emotions felt from self perceived failures. These scars can be created by beating ourself up for mistakes we believe we may have made, for things that we don't like about ourself, or feelings of inadequacy foisted on us by other people. We all have parts of our lives, parts of ourselves that we do not like. These can be things we hate, things we're embarrassed about or simply things we're taught to be wrong. All of these things make up our Shadow. Healing and accepting our Shadow can help us move forward, aleviate stress and depression, even anxiety. By accepting the things that have happened to us, the issues, we become more whole. From  Ravens Wyrd 2010

Wyrd

Wyrd is Anglo-Saxon in origin and means ‘to become’ or ‘to turn’; literally meaning ‘that which has turned’ or ‘that which has become’.  Wyrd can be thought of as becoming something new, on a new path, while still being able to see that which has passed before back to the beginning and incorporating that into the present. Wild is Wonderful

This spring I planted a few wildflowers which are native to this part of Ontario. At the far end of my garden, an area has been created which mimicks a woodland setting; the perfect spot for my wildflowers. In order to remember what they are (beuing that I am well over 50 now), I thought I would log them here in my blog. Enjoy!

The Cherokee Indians used Violets for medicinal purposes. The leaves were used to make a poultice to relieve headaches. The violet flowers were soaked in water and the water was then used to relieve dysentery, colds, coughs, and used as a spring tonic.Violet roots were crushed and used as a poultice to aide in skin aliments. Perhaps the most interesting to me-Violet roots were soaked in water-then the water was used to soak corn seeds prior to planting-this was said to repel insects from the corn.

The May Apple was once called the witches umbrella and thought to be employed by them as a poison. The English version of this plant has much lore told of it, being called Mandrake and believed to be alive. Its screams when pulled from the ground would render a man permanently insane.
These plants can be found in the woods carpeting the forest floors. Sometimes they grow in open fields as well.

According to one legend, (European-angelica) Angelica was revealed in a dream by an angel to cure the plague (hence the name Angelica or Archangel). All parts of the plant were believed effective against evil spirits.
Angelica is used magically as an herb for protection and exorcism.  Grow it in the garden to protect the home.  Make necklaces of the leaves, or carry the root in your pocket for protection.  The dried leaves are burned in exorcism rituals.
To ward off evil spirits inside the home, sprinkle in all four corners of the house.  This, and the burning of the leaves within the home,  is also said to give a joyful outlook to the residents of the home.

Barrenwort also known as Horny Goat Weed and Fairy Wings

Erythronium also known as Fawn-lily, Trout-lily, Dog's-tooth Violet, or Adder's-tongue.
